When I was a junior at UM, I took a class in environmental history from Dan Flores. Towards the end of the semester I wrote a paper that was a scathing review of The Monkey Wrench Gang. At some point during the writing process I convinced myself I didn’t have the experience or gravitas it takes to tear apart Edward Abbey. I backed off, ending my assignment with a lame, “…but it’s a good book, regardless.”

Dan gave me a B. Under the grade he wrote, “This could have been an A paper, but you chickened out at the end. Too bad.”

    Jamie, you get a B.
