Annals of Right-Wing Literature

Posted in Books on 17 January, 2009 by S&Co.

I suppose it shouldn’t surprise me, but it brings home the bullshit in a special way when I’m going through the Summer 2009 HarperCollins catalog and I see that Dick Morris (& Eileen McGann) have announced MELTDOWN, the story of the first 100 days of the Obama (or McCain!) administration. TO BE PUBLISHED IN JUNE 2009, ONE-DAY LAYDOWN 6/23!

So, the stats are a little murky, but it’s good news nonetheless.  Check out this NY Times article about America’s rising percentage of fiction readers.

Collecting Dust in the Attic

Posted in Books on 11 January, 2009 by Jenna

By the time it closed in 1995 after 126 years of operation, Willardlives21 Psychiatric Center, overlooking Seneca Lake in upstate New York, had been home to over 54,000 people.  If not for the discovery of more than 400 suitcases filled with patients’ belongings in the hospital attic, their lives would have been lost to history.  In The Lives They Left Behind, the contents of 10 of these suitcases are skilfully examined and compared to the written record to create a moving–and devastating–group portrait of 20th century American psychiatric care.

My Mistress’s Sparrow Is Dead

mistresss-sparrowSo…let’s say you’re out on a stroll, thinking about what book to read next. You really, really want to read something you know is going to be good (who wants to waste their time getting part way through a book only to put it down, unfinished?). And let’s say you happen to cross paths with Jeffrey Eugenides. Yo Jeff!, you say, executing a high five and some secret handshake. I need a book, dude! Written anything new lately? Eugenides shakes his head, kindly reminding you that Pulitzer Prize winners don’t happen overnight. But, being the good friend he is, he offers, You like short stories? Now, you don’t want to embarrass yourself by admitting to Jeffrey Eugenides that you don’t know if you’ve ever read a short story in your life (or at least not voluntarily). Love ‘em, you say. Got any you’d recommend off the top of your head?

This book would be Eugenides’s answer. (And by the way, he knows you’re lying, but he’ll forgive you if you buy a copy.)

My Mistress’s Sparrow Is Dead, edited by Jeffrey Eugenides (acclaimed author of Middlesex) is a collection of short stories, all relating to love, from some of the best writers of the English language (to name a few…Chekhov, Faulkner, Milan Kundera, Alice Munro, Richard Ford, Bernard Malamud, Stuart Dybek, Raymond Carver, Miranda July…and more). It is hands down one of my favorite new books of ’08, and it’s now out in paperback! My Mistress’s Sparrow Is Dead would make a great gift for Valentine’s Day (though be warned…”love” stories aren’t necessarily happy stories), or just for yourself. Come check it out.
