Gopnik on Updike, etc.

Posted in Books, Excerpts, Journals, News, Opinion on 7 February, 2009 by S&Co.

Adam Gopnik writes about John Updike.

Naomi Klein on being mad as hell.

Matt Taibbi on the ridiculous Thomas Friedman.

Arresting sentence of the week:

Tanya Slaughter looks at me with I don’t give a shit eyes, gets off her bike.

Nicola Keegan, Swimming, a novel (forthcoming from Alfred A. Knopf, July 2009)

Anyone else got an arresting sentence to report?

Stimulus, etc.

Posted in Opinion on 6 February, 2009 by S&Co.

If Obama wants to get votes in Congress I wonder why he doesn’t just frame his stimulus package (and everything else) as a matter of national security. Who’s gonna vote against something that is a matter of national security?

It seems to me that you could frame almost anything as a matter of national security, very easily.

And national security is the one thing Congress can agree on.

Also, I think Olympia Snowe should turn Independent and caucus with the Democrats. Why screw around being a Republican any longer?
